Those shirts aren't white anymore! By the end of the day on Friday, all students have had a chance to tie, then dye their shirts creating a beautiful BNS rainbow of school spirit. Tie dye is super fun, but besides that, screen printing and tie dye are also great ways to make connections with what we see in the stores
How do we make our clothes look like that? For some of the students, actually seeing a screen printing screen and how the ink is pushed through an image is quite a learning process, along with having to think about "how does fabric get color on it"? And, let's not forget creating patterns! Are the rubber bands holding the shirt in a particular way, or are they creating a resist for the pattern? And, that's not even all we've been doing! These young artists have been working on drawing projects as well during this whole process... more to come on that soon!

Hello, my name is Patti Rowland and I am the art teacher for grades K - 8 at Blacksburg New School. I feel very fortunate to be able to have each class for an hour two times a week. Teaching at Blacksburg New School gives me the opportunity to explore and create a curriculum that incorporates choice-based learning, which serves the varying processing styles of our young artists.
