Practice drawing circles and turn them into a caterpillar drawing. RED Room and ORANGE Room artists, give it a try! Check out the other art ideas too! Congratulations to both Amelia and Sheel for their Smokey the Bear poster designs which were chosen by the Blue Ridge District of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs.
Student art shelf artwork has been gathered, put in bags, and ready to be picked up. Bags are on the main building porch and grouped by classes.
I think the students will be excited to go through their art stuff, and may find that they have a project they were in the middle of and could finish. One of the things that I will miss doing with students is going through their portfolios with them when preparing for the end of year art show. It is always a good time to reflect on where their focus has been, are there multiple unfinished projects, are there areas to focus on for the following year, did they rush through and make many projects but not quality, etc. Even though I'm not with them, students can go through their portfolios and make mental notes for themselves for next year. Also, this is a good time for students to add finished art that they haven't previously added to their online gallery (Artsonia.com), then the art can be stored or distributed to family and friends :). Don't forget to check out the link above (and I've included links below) for some guided art ideas while you're at home! Self-guided creating is also encouraged. Students can add their artwork to their galleries on Artsonia to share what they are doing!
Wow! Way to Go Serena!!! District, State, and Regional Winner for her Smokey the Bear Poster.4/1/2020 Serena has been awarded first prize for 5th graders from the Blue Ridge District of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, first prize for 5th graders from the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs (our state organization),and first prize for 5th graders from the South Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs. Her poster was then sent on to the national level where she received a certificate of participation from National Garden Clubs. At your convenience, you can come by the school and pick up student packets on the Red Room picnic tables. Sad news folks.... someone must be such an admirer that they felt they needed to take one of our student artworks for themselves. This has never happened in the history of the Art from the Heart exhibit.

Hello, my name is Patti Rowland and I am the art teacher for grades K - 8 at Blacksburg New School. I feel very fortunate to be able to have each class for an hour two times a week. Teaching at Blacksburg New School gives me the opportunity to explore and create a curriculum that incorporates choice-based learning, which serves the varying processing styles of our young artists.
