I hope your child has been coming home and talking about what they have been doing in art. We have started rolling out the art centers for them to be able to use. Maybe you have seen some of the drawing projects and watercolor projects through Artsonia. Most of these are directed projects to expose the students to specific techniques, skills, artist styles, and terms. However, I feel that it is very important for students to fully immerse in what the arts offer and be able to create, explore, experiment, collaborate, innovate, and problem solve. This doesn't typically happen with only project base artwork, therefore the students class time incorporates both project focussed and self-guided (also known as "choice-based") art time. It's really rewarding to see the students move from that skill-building time and move into that shared inspiration for each other during self-guided time. Check out these photos to get a glimpse of what that looks like.

Hello, my name is Patti Rowland and I am the art teacher for grades K - 8 at Blacksburg New School. I feel very fortunate to be able to have each class for an hour two times a week. Teaching at Blacksburg New School gives me the opportunity to explore and create a curriculum that incorporates choice-based learning, which serves the varying processing styles of our young artists.
