The students at BNS get all twisted up with color theory on Messy Day. Of course they could play the original version to avoid the mess!

Green Room students and Turquoise Room students have been exploring mixing tints and shades. Green room students mixed a color with white, and then black right on their page to explore variations of color. They added a contrasting image or design with India ink to finish the painting. Turquoise students lightly penciled a composition creating many shapes or spaces to paint in. They mixed variations of tints and shades in a pallet to paint in the all of the areas on their page. Check out some examples below! After students complete their skill-building warm up at the beginning of class, they then move on to self-guided art making. Currently, the students have been exploring materials in the drawing, watercolor, and painting centers. Take look a below at some of the art that the students have been working on. Check out the Mystery Artist board by the art room to see who the September Mystery Artist winner is and the featured art for October.

Hello, my name is Patti Rowland and I am the art teacher for grades K - 8 at Blacksburg New School. I feel very fortunate to be able to have each class for an hour two times a week. Teaching at Blacksburg New School gives me the opportunity to explore and create a curriculum that incorporates choice-based learning, which serves the varying processing styles of our young artists.
