Hello BNS Families! Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. My name is Patti Rowland and this is my 11th year teaching art at Blacksburg New School. I am very much looking forward to having a positive and exploratory art-making experience with your children. About Art Let me share a bit more about art and art-related BNS events. Your child is collecting the art they make in a portfolio, which is stored in the art room throughout the year in order to select for exhibit opportunities. A great way that you can support and nurture your child in art is by viewing their online gallery and talking with them about their art. If your child is excited about something that they are working on in the classroom, please feel free to come in and let them show you their “in progress” art. I will share what’s happening in the Art Room through my art blog, so make sure you check that throughout the year at http://bnsartstudio.weebly.com. Keep an eye out for these art-related events!
Why Artsonia?
What I need from you. If you are returning to BNS.... then nothing! You are already set to go. If you are new to BNS, then please respond. Soon there will be communication from Artsonia asking for your permission. This is optional. If you would like to participate, parent permission for your child/ren is required. Visit the Artsonia website (https://www.artsonia.com/parents) for more information. Needed by next week... We kick off the year right away with some BNS spirit! We will be creating class color t-shirts in art. Grades 3-8 will screen print their own. Then all classes will tie dye in coordinating class colors. For grade K-2, shirts are provided by your class teacher, so parents for those grades don't have to do anything. We have found that upper elementary and middle school students start to have more particular preferences, so please send in a WHITE shirt by your child's second art class next week (Green-Th, Turquoise-W, Blue-Th, Sixth-Friday, Seventh-Friday, Eighth-W). Please keep in mind that shirts for this time of year shouldn't have sequins, buttons, pockets, or ruffles/pleats for easier screen printing, and natural fibers like 100% cotton is recommended for dying. Shirts should be marked with name (not initials please) in permanent marker. I’m really looking forward to this year and what it has to bring. I’d love to hear from you! Feel free to email me at [email protected]. Check out http://bnsartstudio.weebly.com/ to follow the happenings of the art room! Thanks for sharing your creative children. Patti

Hello, my name is Patti Rowland and I am the art teacher for grades K - 8 at Blacksburg New School. I feel very fortunate to be able to have each class for an hour two times a week. Teaching at Blacksburg New School gives me the opportunity to explore and create a curriculum that incorporates choice-based learning, which serves the varying processing styles of our young artists.
