Hello BNS Families! Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. We are getting things ready, and what a year this will be! I'm Patti Rowland and I teach K - 8th grade art at Blacksburg New School. I am very much looking forward to learning some new ways to share art-making both at home and in school. About Art If you are familiar with BNS art, the class is composed of both guided and self-guided exploratory components which I have found to be the most effective combination for art discovery. This year I will be offering art in a flipped format, where I will be posting a guided step project in a video (they will be works in progress!) that will be watched by ALL students at home during a convenient time. I will facilitate the students who are in school during their scheduled art time, which might also be a good time for the remote students to work on their art as well. I would like for the designated art time to include both guided art and self guided/choice art making.
Here are some of the All School art happenings (and have become somewhat of a tradition).
If you are a New School oldie but goodie, then you are just keeping your eyes open as new information is being introduced about the flipped class. Look for Art Zoom office hours as well. If you are putting the NEW in New School, then please look out for an invitation from Artsonia and respond to start the student gallery. If you would like to participate, parent permission for your child/ren is required. Visit the Artsonia website (https://www.artsonia.com/parents) for more information. Also, keep an eye out as this new format is rolled out using Canvas. I’m really looking forward to this year and what it has to bring. I’d love to hear from you and/or your child. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]. Check out http://bnsartstudio.weebly.com/ (new info coming soon!) to follow the happenings of the art room! Thanks for sharing your creative children. More to come! Patti

Hello BNS Families! Thank you for sharing your children with us at BNS. I so enjoy creating art with each and every one of them, and am often inspired by their creativity. This has been quite a year and I have missed finishing "in school" with them, but appreciate seeing the art that some of them have been making at home. Tonight we would have been celebrating the students with an end of year Arts Night. We miss being able to do that with them, but it was fun for me to take some time to look at their online portfolios and see what they have accomplished. When you find a few minutes, take a glimpse at what they have done! The link below has a couple of selections from each student as you "go into" each classroom. https://www.artsonia.com/schools/media.asp?id=165433 I hope you are able to find some peace, relaxation, and enjoyment this summer. See you next year!! With appreciation, Patti Tie Dye Fun... Have a great summer! Please make sure to pick up a little something from school before you begin your summer.
You may have noticed last week that there were issues with posting the blog. I have been working to communicate with admin to correct the situation and finally got it resolved yesterday. Thanks for you patience! We should be up and running now for week 9.
*Reminder about Week 10: Thanks to those that have shared your child's art desires for the virtual art show. If you haven't already, please email me two selections from your child's online gallery. Those are due this Friday, May 19. Red, Orange, and Yellow can go to the guided art page for original email. Click here to learn about Wassily Kandinsky.
Learn about Jackson Pollock, the artist who is know for his action paintings.
Learn about Henri Rousseau, the artist the often included exotic plants and animals in his paintings.

Hello, my name is Patti Rowland and I am the art teacher for grades K - 8 at Blacksburg New School. I feel very fortunate to be able to have each class for an hour two times a week. Teaching at Blacksburg New School gives me the opportunity to explore and create a curriculum that incorporates choice-based learning, which serves the varying processing styles of our young artists.
